About Me

Louise Joanne Hampson

A contemporary mixed media artist based in the UK, inspired by the patterns, textures and quiet beauty of the natural world.

My Story

A UK-based practice rooted in observation from walks, coastlines and botanical forms, translated into layered, textural work.

My love of creating has always been connected to spending time outdoors. Whether I’m walking through the countryside, exploring the coastline or simply noticing the details in my everyday surroundings, I’m constantly collecting ideas. The repeating lines of a hedgerow, the texture of weathered stone, the shape of a shell or the delicate structure of a leaf can all become the starting point for a new piece of work.

Back in the studio, these observations are transformed through painting and mixed media. Rather than creating an exact representation of a place, I’m interested in capturing its atmosphere, rhythm and the feeling it leaves behind. My work often sits somewhere between landscape and abstraction, allowing each painting to evolve naturally through layers of colour, texture and mark-making.

My Practice

Experimentation is at the heart of everything I create. I enjoy working intuitively, allowing materials and processes to guide the direction of each piece. By building layers, introducing texture and embracing the unexpected, every artwork develops its own character.

I work with a combination of paint, paper and mixed media, using techniques that create a balance between deliberate decisions and organic chance. It’s this unpredictability that keeps my practice exciting and ensures that every painting is unique.

I’m fascinated by the way small details come together to create something much larger. Tiny marks, repeated patterns and subtle changes in texture gradually build into compositions that invite closer observation. I hope my work encourages others to slow down, take a second look and appreciate the beauty found in the natural world.

Materials & Process

Working with Natural Materials

Materials

I work with paint, paper and mixed media, selecting materials for the way they hold texture, colour and expressive marks. Each layer contributes to the depth and character of the finished piece.

Process

Every painting begins with observation and experimentation. Through layering, mark-making and mixed media techniques, I allow each piece to develop naturally, responding to the materials as the work evolves.

Inspiration

Nature provides an endless source of inspiration, from coastlines to weathered surfaces and botanical forms. These quiet details continue to shape my work and inspire every new collection.
